With close to two decades of experience in Quality Management Systems and the heart of an artist, Phil enjoys exploring the dynamics between creativity and structure. His work strives to bridge the tools and benefits of “big-q” Quality away from where it’s traditionally been applied into new settings and scenarios. He recently acquired a 107 year-old letterpress and has been venturing into printmaking of various forms, where “the process is the art.” A Yooper most of his life, you can usually find Phil outside, in the sauna, playing music, feeding people, or exploring this beautiful part of earth with his family.

A Framework for Outdoor Industry Growth

2:15PM-3PM

It’s no secret that the Upper Peninsula is a hub of all things outdoor recreation, but there hasn’t been a comprehensive strategy to grow the outdoor recreation industry in the region – until now. Over the past year and half, Innovate Marquette and Central UP Planning and Development have pulled together the Outdoor Recreation Innovation Action Network (ORIAN), a group a public and private stakeholders working in the outdoor recreation space throughout the 6 counties of the central UP. This group oversaw the development of an outdoor recreation industry growth strategy and an electrified trails feasibility study, which were both published and presented at the inaugural UP Outdoor Summit.

This session will cover the process of engaging stakeholders through ORIAN, lessons learned, results of the growth strategy and feasibility study, and next steps for the region.
