Jordan Ph.D

Scott Jordan Ph.D., is an Associate Professor teaching in the Outdoor Recreation Leadership and Management degree program. He also is the Director of the Administration of Outdoor Recreation and Nature-based Tourism MS degree at Northern Michigan University. Scott has extensive experience in the field of outdoor recreation where he has worked in the guiding industry, the aerial adventure industries, and higher education systems. This work has enabled him to serve the outdoor industry on a national level as President of the Board of Directors for the Wilderness Education Association and on the Executive Committee of the Professional Ropes Course Association. Through these associations, he participated in the development of an American national standard for zip line and challenge course construction and operations and has co-authored a textbook on the topic. Most recently, Scott’s research interests have turned to community planning in association with nature based tourism development in rural areas. In this regard, he desires to develop a sustainable model for nature based tourism and outdoor recreation for the United States. When not working Scott enjoys fly fishing, mountain biking, and hikes with his wife Cathy his dogs Kraken and Maverick. This winter Scott hopes to take up dog sledding.

Preparing Future Leaders in the Outdoor Industry

Explore curriculum design, development of key skills and abilities (KSAs), and the practical applications of the outdoor recreation-focused academic programs at Northern Michigan University through collaborative projects and research. Attendees will engage in small group discussions to identify the outdoor industry’s needs for professional development and workforce training, and to brainstorm ideas for enhancing the synergy between academic programs and industry demands.
